The Women’s Center of the Peninsula on Binkley Street in Soldotna is a testimony to the progress in the quality of life and health care that has been made in the community over the last few decades. From two physicians Dr. Gaede MD and Dr. Isaak MD for all health care needs to a state of the art specialty clinic for women providing highly specialized loving care. In May last year Dr. Jo Lynn Hawthorne, M.D., F.A.C.O.G, Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology opened the beautiful new Women’s Center of the Peninsula. “The Women’s Center of the Peninsula’s passion is caring for and supporting women throughout every stage of life. The entire team at The Women’s Center of the Peninsula is involved in providing this highly specialized loving care. In this environment you will find that you are treated with the love, respect and compassion that as a wonderful human being every woman deserves,” says Dr. Hawthorne.
Formerly from Greenville, Tennessee she says coming to Alaska was a dream incubated by her father many years ago, “Daddy said he wanted to move the family to Alaska but never made it. Then five summers ago my family came up here on vacation and when I went home that fall I started thinking about coming back to Alaska. I applied for my Alaska medical license and started looking so when a job opened up here in Soldotna through Central Peninsula Hospital I jumped on it the minute I heard about it. CPH has developed quite a reputation now for becoming a major medical health care facility and in May my husband and I moved here. We opened the Women’s Center and we absolutely love it even with the winter we’re having this year. It certainly is a different culture from eastern Tennessee.
Dr. Jo Lynn Hawthorne of The Women’s Center of the Peninsula is a board certified OB/GYN. Dr. Hawthorne attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia; she completed her OG/GYN Internship and Residency at the same college. She completed her undergraduate degree at Southern College in Collegedale, Tennessee. Dr. Hawthorne is a Fellow of the American college of Obstetricians and Gynecologist. “I believe each woman is unique and has a special purpose here on earth. When a woman’s body is in optimal health, she is better able to fulfill that purpose. It is my desire to assist women at whatever stage they are at in their wonderful journey of life,” said Dr. Hawthorne. “We basically see women for their reproductive needs and gynecology needs from the time they are teenagers through late menopause so I am Board Certified OBGYN capable of taking care of all prenatal care, unless it’s extremely high risk requiring a maternal fetal specialist. I do complete obstetrical services and ultra sounds here in the Women’s Center and we are capable of doing C-Sections and complete gynecologic care. Dr. Hawthorne has hospital privileges for deliveries at Central Peninsula Hospital; we do not deliver at the center. We are considered primary care for women and almost all insurance companies allow you to come directly here,” she said. Dr. Hawthorne loves her job and loves bringing new life into the world, “There is nothing more exciting than bringing a baby into the world, it’s a new wonderful being and I get to be the first person to welcome it into the world. After thousands of deliveries it has never lost its thrill.”
