Caines Head State Recreation Area Caines Head State Recreation Area, eight miles by boat from Seward on the west side of Resurrection Bay, contains several World War II bunkers and gun emplacements which guarded the year-round entrance to the bay during the war. The area is also accessible by a trail that leads from the Caines Head trailhead parking area on Lowell Point. The 4 mile access is a combination of uplands and tidelands, so travel during LOW TIDE only is possible. Two miles from the trailhead is Tonsina Point, where camping and picnic facilities are located. Several miles of trails have been cleared to provide hikers with easier access to some of the old facilities from both the North Beach and South Beach. There are 2 picnic/camping shelters with fireplaces, a latrine and Ranger Station at North Beach. A new Public Use Cabin at Derby Cove, located 1/2 mile north, may be reserved. For reservations contact Alaska State Parks at 262-5581. The area is 5,961 acres in size and is staffed during the summer and fall by a state park ranger.
