S 68 Turnagain Pass Rest Area.
Heavy snow accumulations make this a favorite snowplay area in winter. The west side of the highway is designated a snowmobile area, while the east side is zoned for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Much of the terrain is gently sloping but excellent alpine mountaineering is also available in the vicinity. In summer, Turnagain Pass is carpeted with lush wildflowers. Visitors can easily hike among the low vegetation. Vibrant Nootka lupine, western columbine and shooting stars provide a riot of color. Please leave the flowers for everyone to enjoy. Hoary marmots can sometimes be spotted sunning on the open hilltops. Those who take off for backcountry areas of the forest should notify a responsible person of their planned route and use the buddy system. Back-country winter recreationists should carry survival gear such as a snow shovel, rescue beacon, matches, maps, compass, high-energy food and extra clothing; especially socks or gloves to protect extremities.
