Personally I believe that it is not necessary at all to provide air travel, taxi cabs, hotels, food and lodging and days and days of these expenses for our legislators to attend conferences in Washington, D.C. in the middle of the session.

I am not impressed by assurances that these bear problems are not going to be an excuse for writing tickets. Look at the evidence given in the very article: today it’s a neighborhood; tomorrow, a city-wide ordinance. Then comes the borough.

Sure, mining offers jobs and coal offers energy. But those jobs won’t last long; they’ll burn out as quickly as the coal, leaving nothing behind but a big, black smudge on our shattered watershed and earth’s already-damaged atmosphere.
