Agrium plant to be transported to Nigeria

Posted: May 26, 2011 - 1:54pm

There's a shipping contract that would transport the Agrium plant from Nikiski to Nigeria in August for $28 million, but so far the plant hasn't been sold.

Fairstar Heavy Transport announced Tuesday on the Oslo Stock Exchange they will be responsible for the move.

"We will be involved in moving the original modules from Alaska to Nigeria where the (liquified natural gas) will be supplied as a much lower cost," said Chief Executive Officer Philip Adkins in an email.

Adkins said the economics of LNG prompted the move, but the plant still has a useful life to carry out in Nigeria.

Agrium's Paul Poister said Wednesday that the company has not yet finalized a sale.

According to Fairstar's announcement, 111 modules and 70 containers from the plant are being moved to Ossiomo, Nigeria. The company will use two ships to get them to Koko, Nigeria, where the company will arrange land transport to Ossiomo. The $28 million covers the water transportation, but not subcontracts for land transit.

"We are currently reviewing proposals from various land transportation sub-contractors and expect to choose our partners in Alaska and Nigeria in the next few weeks," Adkins said in the Tuesday announcement.
