Fire claims cabin on Caribou Island

Posted: May 30, 2011 - 11:00am

A fire broke out on Caribou Island Sunday afternoon, destroying a cabin and about a half acre of land, according to Alaska Division of Forestry Public Information Officer Bud Sexton.

Crews from Forestry, Central Emergency Services and the Kenai Fire Department responded to the fire on the island located near the southern shore of Skilak Lake.

The fire started around 3 p.m. Sexton said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Sexton said most fires in Alaska are human caused, and to be careful while burning. This includes making sure camp fires are not left unattended and extinguished properly.

There is still a burn barrel suspension during the Memorial Day holiday weekend which will remain in effect until further notice.

For more information about the burn barrel suspension call 260-4269.
