Head-on collision sends 1 to hospital

A head-on collision just before Mile 15 of the Kenai Spur Highway on Monday morning totaled two cars and sent one driver to the hospital with minor injuries.

Sgt. Ben Langham from the Kenai Police Department said Soldotna resident Jose Gomez, 21, was traveling north on the Spur Highway when he crossed the centerline near Sunset Boulevard and collided with a 2006 Denali GMC traveling southbound.

The driver of the GMC, 64-year-old Kenai resident Michael Dale, was not injured, but Gomez was taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Langham said Gomez had minor injuries.

Langham said the police found the accident to be Gomez’s fault. He was issued a citation for driver inattention.

Gomez was driving a 2000 KIA Sedan, Langham said.

Kenai Police Department, Kenai Fire Department and Nikiski Fire Department all responded to the incident just after 10 a.m., Langham said. The highway remained open, and the police were on the scene for under an hour, he said.
