1 dead, 2 injured in Sterling Highway collision

A Kasilof man died Saturday of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision that injured two others on the Sterling Highway south of Soldotna. On Saturday at 2:04 p.m., the Soldotna Public Safety Communication Center received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle crash near Mile 97.5 of the Sterling Highway involving two vehicles. Investigators found that a blue 2003 GMC truck, driven by Lavern Joseph Kitchen, 69, of Kasilof, was northbound and a red 1997 Dodge truck, driven by Jacob Schooley, 16, of Soldotna, was southbound. The red Dodge crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the blue GMC. All occupants of both vehicles were taken to Central Peninsula Hospital with injuries. Lavern Kitchen was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Nancy Kitchen, 65, a passenger in the GMC, suffered a broken arm and an injured leg. Schooley suffered minor injuries. Investigation continues. Central Emergency Services, Alaska State Troopers, Soldotna Patrol, Soldotna Police and the Bureau of Highway Patrol, Kenai Peninsula Team, responded to the scene.
