Crane snags overhead lines in Kenai

The arm of a large crane being hauled by a tractor trailer snagged some overarching wires near the intersection of the Kenai Spur Highway and Redoubt Avenue Tuesday evening.

According to Kenai Police Department Sgt. Kelly George, the crane’s boom caught the line as the tractor trailer passed under it, exerting such force that the attached wooden power pole splintered at the point of connection.

“It’s kind of leaning out where it got pulled, but then the power lines are holding it up on the top so it fractured about two-thirds of the way up,” George explained, “which is a bad thing, because now we have hot lines up there with an unsteady pole.”

George said Homer Electric and GCI would be coming out to investigate the situation and decide what to do about the broken pole and downed line.

A representative from Homer Electric said the downed line was in fact a television cable wire and that no power outages resulted from the accident.

The Kenai Police Department closed a stretch of the Spur and rerouted traffic through Redoubt Avenue and North Forest Drive while the situation was addressed.
