Kenai homes lose power

The lights went out in Kenai Sunday afternoon when a transmission line went out of service near the Beaver Creek substation.

Local utility Homer Electric Association's Joe Gallagher said about 1900 homes along the Kenai Spur Highway from Kenai Central High School to Big Eddy Road, including the Beaver Loop area, were without power for about an hour and a half. The outage lasted from 1:45 to 3:22 p.m., Gallagher said.

“The line is out of service but everybody has their power back on,” Gallagher said later in the afternoon.

The association was able to refeed power to the area from different substations to end the outage, he said. The utility planned to find the transmission line and repair it, but in the meantime Gallagher said customers should not notice a difference in their service. The outage was likely caused by a tree falling on the line or some other type of interference, he said.
