Carey endorses Navarre for mayor

Posted: October 1, 2011 - 1:04pm  |  Updated: October 1, 2011 - 1:05pm

Borough Mayor David Carey has decided throw his weight behind one of the six candidates seeking to take his seat in Tuesday's election.

Carey recently announced he is endorsing former state legislator and borough mayor Mike Navarre to hold the borough's top spot.
"I feel that looking clearly that Mike has the background as well as the energy and the correct perspective," he said.
Carey said it was a hard decision to make, considering he knows all of the other candidates and feels they too are "good candidates." But, he said the borough is headed toward "difficult times."
"In this borough we have 27 schools that we work with in terms of maintenance," he said. "We have people in Homer, we have people in Seward, we have a number of different service areas and I think that (we need) someone who is accustomed to working with a lot of different people, with a common goal ... and I think (Navarre) has the background to make sure he keeps in place the team that's necessary to run this borough for the next few years."
Carey added some other candidates seem to have a "relatively narrow group" that they will seek to represent "very well."
"I believe Mike Navarre is committed - and I have met with him a number of times to talk about this - he is committed to representing everyone, and that's the best government we need for the future," Carey said.

Who Cares?

Who cares what Careys opinion is about his replacement? There is only one candidate that does not represent more of the same old establishment ways. That candidate is Fred Sturman. Vote Fred if you want responsible government. Everyone has an opinion who to vote for, and I think my opinion is just as valid as Carey's.

Carey made lots of wrong decisions...

The guy that told Carey to endorse Navarre was the same one who told him to give raises to all his staff when he first came into office... "Cause we need MORE MONEY!" Dave Carey had no substance, he was there to fill the seat and won because the people threw out John Williams.

Good riddance Carey....

Carey's Mistake

Mike Navarre was a spoiled brat when he was in Juneau. His anti-jobs, pro-commerical fishing, and childish behavior was an embaressment to our community.

Anyone but Navarre.

Fred Sturman?

Fred has blinders on. With vision that narrow the peninsula would waste away.

I really hesitate to elect Fred because he calls in to Sound Off every day with his daily misguided rants. It doesn't speak well for the sanity of the candidate.

sound off

I agree with ya Soldotna. The few times that I have had the radio on in the morning seems like he is on soundoff every time. Ranting and raving with no clear idea how to fix things, just [filtered word] and moan.

Mike has the experience, intelligence, and integrity to be mayor. I am one voter who wishes to move forward, not backwards and if fred gets elected, we will definitely be moving backwards.

Freedom of Speech 10/5/11

Wed. 10/5/11
KSRM's Sound Off program is a Most Excellent Example of
Freedom of Speech. Democracy in Action

& Yes Fred voices His opinion numerous times BUT Fred has EARNED that opinion cause He actually VOTES.
Fred makes the time to participate & contribute to democracy.

& No I do NOT agree with Fred Sturman & the ACT Committee
but I would Defend to the Death their Right to Say It.

The Majority of Alaskan NON-Voters are Un-Declared Independent Voters that are neither Republican or Democrat & they are actually Proud of the Fact that they do NOT Vote
& do NOT participate in democracy. Therefore our aweful embrassing, shameful Voter Turn Out each election.

Un-Declared Independent Alaskans that do NOT Vote
have in my book given up their Freedom of Speech & no longer have a opinion or a voice because they refuse to
participate & contribute to democracy.

Vote Fred

Now I'm more convinced than ever that my vote for Fred yesterday was the right vote. Anything to do with Carey can't be legit because Carey can't be trusted and he's proved that time and again. However, I do give Carey credit for being smart enough to know that he couldn't win another election.

It's business as usual or Fred

Mike Navarre has excellent administrative skills, but his history and support for big government issues puts his agenda in direct conflict with anyone who believes that Borough government should not continue to increase spending.

In 1999, he and Hal Smalley tried to convince people to vote to allow government to spend a portion of the PFD. Fred gathered signatures with Ed Martin, Sr. to oppose Navarre's plan.

Navarre believed that rescinding the grocery tax exemption would be in the best interests of Borough citizens. Sturman opposed taking away the exemption that provided tax relief to local residents.

The comparison can go on and on. Mike Navarre is strongly supported by the local NEA (school union) and often has KPEA President LaDawn Druce in tow during public events. You can be certain that Ms. Druce has one prevailing priority and that is to increase Borough funding and spending.

Mr. Navarre always falls to the side of supporting more funding for government. Fred has fought for years to bring the voter's will into the process of our so called "representative" government.

I trust the people and I trust Fred. Those who want and need more public tax dollars will be voting. He will need your support on October 25th.
