Brown bear sightings in Soldotna residential area

Posted: October 13, 2011 - 6:47pm  |  Updated: October 13, 2011 - 9:35pm

A brown bear has been spotted in the Soldotna area over the past two days. There were six sighting of the bear last night, Sgt. Stace Escott said.
The Soldotna Police Department has had a number of complaints about a brown bear getting into people's garbage in the residential area of River View, which is directly behind the police station.
The bear has caused some property damage. It has knocked over fences trying to escape capture and evade residents.
The police will coordinate with the Department of Fish and Game to make a decision on how to deal with the bear. If it clearly becomes a threat to Soldotna residents police will dispose of the bear.
Residents are being advised to clean up their property by putting away outdoor food sources for bears, such as bird feeders, fish smokers and garbage cans.

TASER ON A BROWN BEAR?

Would a taser really take down a Big Brownie? I am afraid it might just P*** off the bear and make even more dangerous. I agree it needs to be distroyed because relocation will not work with a garbage feed bear, but tasering is not the right way about it. It puts in danger the person depending on the voltage to bring the bear down long enought to do what needs to be done. Either shoot with a dart to put to sleep then distroy or a sharpshooter to just shoot a clean kill. I understand this sounds uncaring but childrens lives are at stake and better safe than sorry.

It was a jpke

Diane, That was posted as a joke and he was only asking for a volunteer to do the test. Hopefully, a track star because they would have to outrun the bear when it took off after them.

The comment that the police should quit tossing donuts out of their back door was also a joke....I think.
