Wind knocks out power

Windy weather caused power outages around the central Kenai Peninsula on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday night, high winds had knocked out power to 6,000 homes between Nikiski and Homer, according to Homer Electric Association.

Homer Electric Association’s Joe Gallagher said there were scattered outages throughout the central Peninsula, particularly in Kasilof, Soldotna and Kenai Tuesday afternoon. Gallagher said 154 homes on Kenai’s Lawton Drive lost power Tuesday afternoon, and about 45 near Big Eddy Road in Soldotna also were without service. Both of those outages were restored before 3:30 p.m. A larger swath of homes - 325 - lost power in North Kenai. Gallagher said that a crew was headed out to make repairs that afternoon. “In addition, there have been several blinks on the system that are the result of trees bouncing on the power lines,” Gallagher said in an email. Those are expected with strong wind, he said.

Winds picked up in the evening, though, and as of 8 p.m., power was out along Kalifornsky Beach Road as well as the Sterling Highway from Kasilof to Soldotna, with dozens of smaller outages in neighborhoods in Kasilof, Soldotna, Sterling, Kenai and Nikiski. Crews were expected to be working into Wednesday to restore power.

Anyone who sees a downed power line should report it to HEA and leave the area, Gallagher said. To report a downed line or outgae, call 1-888-8OUTAGE or 1-888-868-8243.
