Energy fair offers information

Posted: November 3, 2011 - 4:27pm

Kenai Middle School will be a source of education for the whole family this Saturday when the annual Energy Fair takes over the school. Homer Electric Association’s energy fair will include sessions geared to adults, and booths for kids to enjoy. Presentations geared toward helping homeowners will take place throughout the day.

Among the presenters will be Wisdom and Associates, a firm that provides a variety of home energy-related services including energy ratings and indoor air quality investigations, according to its website. The firm also teaches related classes throughout the state.

“They’re going to talk about home energy audits and things you can do to your house to make it more efficient,” said HEA’s Joe Gallagher.

Alaska Housing Finance Corporation will talk about state programs to help homeowners and how to navigate the application processes. The state offers energy rebate and weatherization programs.

“It’s really a popular deal,” Gallagher said.

Ocean Renewable Power Company, a relative newcomer to the Kenai Peninsula, will also be presenting. ORPC will talk about the company’s efforts to develop tidal power in the Cook Inlet.

In addition to the presentations, Gallagher said the event includes 25 businesses and organizations sharing information about energy conservation.

The vendors will have information on construction materials, lighting options, alternative energy and other energy-related issues.

Local youth will also be honored for their entries in HEA’s essay contest.

Door prizes, hot dogs, popcorn, and refreshments will be available.

The fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at KMS. More information on presentation times and participating vendors is available at HEA’s website, http://www.homerelectric.com/.

The vendors and presentations will also be at an energy fair in Homer Nov. 12 at West Homer Elementary School.
