Power outages plague Peninsula

More than 2,600 central Kenai Peninsula homes and businesses lost power Sunday during a snowstorm.

The city of Kenai experienced the largest outage when the Marathon Road substation went off-line around 4 p.m. About 2,500 Homer Electric Association customers from Beaver Loop Road and along the Kenai Spur Highway through Kenai to Redoubt Avenue were without power from the outage. Power was restored by 5 p.m., after HEA reconfigured its distribution system, according to the utility’s spokesman, Joe Gallagher.

According to a statement from Gallagher, the association thought the outage was caused by a problem on the transmission line from Kenai and Nikiski, and planned to have crews search for the problem. As of 7 p.m. Sunday, the exact location of the issue was unknown.

Other outages were scattered throughout the central Peninsula. Kenai, Sterling and Mackey Lake saw outages throughout the day. HEA customers near Poppy Lane in Soldotna, Hinnerman Street in Nikiski and Robinson Loop near Sterling were without power past 7 p.m., according to Gallagher.

The southern end of the Peninsula also lost power. By 7 p.m., electricity had been restored in Homer.

A generator was serving the Seldovia area with power because of an outage caused by a tree near Sunshine Point on Saturday night taking down the main power line that serves the southern Kachemak Bay communities, Gallagher said.

The association planned to attempt repairs on that line Monday, if weather allowed.

According to the utility, people who spot a downed line or have an outage should call 1-888-8243.

The Associated Press reported that a storm was under way Sunday throughout Southcentral Alaska, causing power outages in Anchorage and elsewhere.
