Nikiski man arrested for burglary, theft

Kenai Police officers and Alaska State Troopers arrested a 26-year-old Nikiski man connected with burglary and car theft, said Kenai Police Chief Gus Sandahl.

Matthew Stough was arrested at an acquaintance's home in Nikiski on Dec. 26. Law officials acted on an arrest warrant relating to the charges, Sandahl said.

Facing multiple felony charges, Stough's family reported he was "on the run." He had an extensive history of fleeing from law enforcement, according to court records.

Stough and his alleged accomplice Kathleen M. Booth, 32, are both charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree theft, first-degree vehicle theft, tampering with evidence and fourth-degree criminal mischief. All four charges are class B or C felonies, excluding criminal mischief.

Booth was arrested Dec. 21 and remains at Wildwood Correctional Center awaiting trial.

The alleged burglary occurred Dec. 15. A Kenai police officer responded to a residence when it was discovered there were tracks in Dallas and Mary Armstrong's driveway. A friend was watching the home while the two were on vacation in Mexico, according to court records.

The Armstrongs reported many items stolen, including prescription medications, a 32-inch television and 45 pieces of jewelry. A Toyota truck was stolen as well, according to court records.

Following investigation and obtaining a search warrant, police searched Stough's trailer. Police reported during the search many of the stolen items were recovered including the jewelry.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 6 at the Kenai Courthouse.
