Refuge open for snowmachiners

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is now open for snowmaching in certain areas.

Refuge Manager Andy Loranger announced the opening Wednesday. In a statement from the refuge, he said snowfall on the eastern side of the refuge allowed for the opening.

The Headquarters area on Ski Hill Road, the Skilak Loop Special management Area, the Swanson River and Swan Lake Canoe Systems, Wolf Lake pipeline corridor and all areas above timberline except in the Caribou Hills, are closed to snowmachining at all times.

According to a statement from the refuge, lakes, rivers and streams may not be sufficiently frozen so users are asked to be cautious.
