Ice jam could lead to flooding on Kenai River

Posted: December 31, 2011 - 1:15pm

The National Weather Service river gauge at the Soldotna bridge on Friday indicated a rapid rise in the water level. Observations of ice conditions below the Soldotna bridge indicate a possible ice jam between the Soldotna bridge and the Poacher’s Cove area.

A possible water surge could occur should the ice jam release. Persons living in low lying areas downstream of the bridge such as Poacher’s Cove and Big Eddy, should be alert to a possible rapid rise in the river water level.

According to the National Weather Service, the current cold snap which is causing significant ice growth on the river will persist through the weekend and into next week. The potential exists for minor flooding and damage from ice movement over the next several days as the kenai river freeze-up process works its way upstream. Owners of riverside structures such as docks landings or bankside staircases should take precautions to protect property from damage.

The Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation.
