Managers watching for Kenai flood

Emergency managers are keeping an eye on an ice jam on the Kenai River, but as of Monday afternoon, no flooding had been reported.

The National Weather Service river gauge at the Sterling Highway bridge in Soldotna on Friday indicated a rapid rise in the water level. Observations of ice conditions below the Soldotna bridge indicate a possible ice jam between the Soldotna bridge and the Poacher's Cove area.

On Monday, Borough Office of Emergency Management Director Eric Morhmann said he's been checking on river conditions throughout the weekend, and river levels remain unchanged from Friday's reading.

Emergency managers are recommending that people living in low lying areas downstream of the bridge, such as Poacher's Cove and Big Eddy, be alert to a possible rapid rise in the river water level.

Owners of riverside structures such as docks, landings or bankside staircases should take precautions to protect property from damage.
