Seward Highway reopened

The Seward Highway was reopened as of 11:30 a.m., according to Alaska Department of Transportation. The Whittier Tunnel is also open and adhering to its published schedule, DOT said.

 

The highway was closed Tuesday from Potter Marsh to Girdwood after two avalanches occurred in the McHugh Creek area, coupled with severe weather conditions which caused very low visibility. 

The Whittier tunnel was closed Tuesday as well due to similar severe weather conditions.

Winter driving conditions are still prevalent along the highway with winds and limited visibility, DOT said. With additional snow in the forecast, DOT advises drivers to drive cautiously at safe speeds for the driving conditions encountered.
