The Kenai Peninsula Borough and other statewide agencies are conducting a joint exercise this week called “Alaska Shield 2012.” The exercise will test the community’s ability to respond to an extreme cold weather emergency.
KPB is seeking individuals to participate as evacuees at the shelter. Interested persons can contact Glenda at the KPB Office of Emergency Services at 262-2098.
Organizers will provide two meals, cots and blankets at the shelter beginning Friday at 5:30 p.m. through Saturday at 10 a.m. The borough needs 70 people to fill the shelter.
KPB’s participation during the statewide exercise will focus on providing public information and mass sheltering for area residents. The scenario will include a mock loss in natural gas pressure.
“Our state, communities and partner agencies have established emergency plans and policies that guide our actions during an emergency. Statewide exercises like Alaska Shield allow us to evaluate what works, what needs to be improved and perhaps discover innovative new ways to respond to emergencies,” said John Madden, director of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, in a press release.

Add commentI would like to thank the KPB
I would like to thank the KPB for doing this exercise to help those of us on the Kenai that could become cut off from Hope Bridge North by many events.
I would also like to ask the KPB if they are the ones that had the 12 steps to disaster preparedness this last yr to PLEASE run it again, all at the same time if possible, as it has some GR8 ideas for survival that many may not have taken serious.
Prior planning ahead as i tend to do has me doing other things for this Friday/Sat., but i do appreciate this & all that will partake in this drill.
Thank You to ALL that help in this plan of preparedness, and to the KP Borough for promoting it.
