Soldotna man faces sexual abuse charges

A 51-year-old Soldotna man has been charged with 20 counts of sexual abuse of a minor. The alleged abuse occurred over six years.

Charges against Ronald D. Sackett include eight counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and 12 counts of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor. Arraignment is set for Tuesday at the Kenai Courthouse.

According to court records, Soldotna Police officer Rory Espy began investigating the alleged abuse when the Office of Children’s Services reported a minor had been harmed. During the officer’s initial interview, a 14-year-old-girl said Sackett had sexually abused her over a six-year period, beginning in 2002 and ending in 2008.

The alleged abuse began when the girl was 6. Police report she first recalls Sackett removing her underwear. She noted the names of her teachers at the time to indicate her age.

This act continued “almost every other day” while she was between the ages of 6 and 8, according to court records.

Contact with Sackett became more sexual around 8, she alleged. He began rubbing her back, bottom and genital area. The alleged abuse further escalated around this time, to digital and oral penetration. This contact occurred two to three times per month while she was between 8 and 12, and lasted about 30 minutes, police report.

Sackett also allegedly forced the girl to touch his genitals, police report.

The state’s case against Sackett began in October 2010. A series of preliminary hearings with multiple judges — Matthew Christian, Jennifer Wells, Sharon Illsley — have been continued or rescheduled since that time.

He has no other criminal record.

Sackett remains in custody at Wildwood Correctional Center without bail. Judge Charles Huguelet will preside over the defendant’s arraignment.
