FBI says Rep.Young spent campaign cash freely

Posted: April 21, 2012 - 8:21pm

Documents released by the FBI show a source told investigators an Alaska congressman and his late wife spent campaign money on hunting trips and flights and wrote checks to themselves over years of allegedly profligate spending on his contributors’ dime.

The allegations were not enough to convince the FBI that they could convict Rep. Don Young and the matter was dropped in 2010.

The documents were released Friday, more than three months after a federal judge rejected the Justice Department’s refusal to turn over records of its criminal investigation.

The source, whose identify was redacted in the documents, appeared to have intimate knowledge of Young’s D.C. office and was familiar with Young and his wife’s conduct during fundraising trips.

Congress asked the Justice Department in 2008 to investigate Young’s role in securing a $10 million earmark to widen a Florida highway.

The project would have benefited a developer who helped raise money for Young. The congressman was re-elected to a 20th term in 2010.

Young’s press secretary, Luke Miller, said Saturday that the matter should be considered closed.

“First and foremost, Congressman Young is not under investigation and any assertion that he is, is utterly false,” Miller said. “The reckless accusations made yesterday are part of a larger effort to smear the Congressman.

“Congressman Young has cooperated with the investigative process every step of the way and nothing was found. Simply put — it’s time to move on.”

The watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington submitted its Freedom of Information Act request a year ago seeking all records related to the Young investigation that are not covered by grand jury secrecy, including the Department of Justice’s decision not to file charges.

The department’s agencies declined to search for any requested documents, and instead flatly denied the request on grounds that any release of documents would violate the Privacy Act. But a federal judge said Young has “minimal” private interest considering that the investigation was not secret and that he publicly announced that the department was not going to charge him.

Many of the allegations made by the source centered on spending for personal expenses.

“There were many instances when hunting trips coincided with campaign trips for Young,” the source told investigators.

The campaign barely broke even on some of these trips, including one to Savannah Dhu in upstate New York in which the campaign hoped to raise $24,000 but only raised $4,000. Even when fundraisers weren’t held, the hunting trips would go forward.

Though the document is about Young, his late wife, Lu, draws at least as much of the focus. Her spending, demands on Young’s staff and at-times stormy relationship with her husband take up pages of the documents

“Don and Lu Young have a loving relationship, but frequently have volatile arguments,” said the source.

Lu Young died in 2009. She was a constant presence in Young’s D.C. office, and the state of Alaska lowered its flags to half-staff after her death.

Many of the source’s contentions focused on Lu Young’s spending. A $17,000 flight from Anchorage to D.C. on a FedEx jet, charter flights to their second home laden with building supplies and fishing licenses for guests on a trip were all born by campaign expenses, the source said. Angry with Alaska Airlines, she allegedly asked the airline “if they still wanted their gate at (Washington, D.C.’s) National Airport.”

“There was no doubt,” investigators wrote, “that the expenses Lu Young was submitting were inappropriate, and it was a common topic of discussion in the office.”

First Ted Stevens and now Don

First Ted Stevens and now Don Young AH?
Funny how the Govt. machine is culling out those that refuse to submit to their power hungry for absolute control of every one and every thing for that promised New Hope & Change to believe in isn't it?
With the $2 Billion a yr profit for the incarceration machine that has to opperate at 90% capacity the search for new occupiers of those cells is being ramped up more than ever.
Remember the investigations that Jesse Ventura did on all the hidden in plain sight prisons that are ready for those determined to be domestic threats? Innocent people are going to prison for no real offences or minor ones to keep this sharing equally money scam going.
It does seem that with the passing of every day more of OUR freedoms are being removed that will push America into that desired civil war or revolution that Obama needs to dissolve OUR Constitution for a joining of their OWO plans.

You may be asking what has any of this to do with the accusations against Don Young and all i can say is that it does seem funny how this forced removal of those that refuse to submit to the plan seems to be spreading like wild fire across America. Maybe Don is guilty, i don't know, but if he is then yes he should have to pay for his error, but what about all the rest that blatantly break the laws and are allowed to escape due to their affileation with the control machine in DC? Does Isaiah 1:23 apply here or not?
Remember Ted being accuited for his supposed ethic violations after his removal as a senator and death? Everyone of us can be falsely accused of things and never really allowed to prove what is true or false many times.

After the fiasco that was Ted

After the fiasco that was Ted Steven's false conviction, and its tragic fallout on the election, I don't have much patience for these digging expeditions. If there was something to find, they would have found it by now. Now they're milking it for its suspicion value only.

Shame on you Clarion

The headline says the "FBI says Rep. Young spent campaign cash freely." That's clearly not what the article says. One source, very possible a disgruntled former employee is the source of the statement, not the FBI.

Shame on You Clarion for running the false and misleading headline. Unfortunately it's expected out of the AP and other national publications, but the Clarion should have higher standards.

Watchman, Stevens was

Watchman, Stevens was prosecuted by the previous administration and his conviction set aside by the "New Hope and Change" administration. Stevens paled around with a snake, is it any wonder he got bit by said snake. This is not to disparage Stevens, but I find it interesting that people who once worshipped at the alter of Bill Allen (his money and influence anyway) are now so indignant at what transpired.

granny If we want to

granny
If we want to investigate someone that pals around with snakes then we should also look at OUR chosen Divider of America that says WE CAN'T WAIT, WE MUST ACT NOW and is bypassing Congress at every turn to dissolve OUR Constitution that he so proudly studied his whole life and is now going about to dissolve it along with OUR Soverign Rights as a FREE people.
This chosen one will usher in a Global Slavery of ALL people when his Dream Act is completed, and many fools are worshipping him and his Snake pals daily at their altars.

I'm not saying either way on Ted or Don, other than to say i do find it strange that Alaska's Republicans are the only ones that are supposed to be dirty, especially when we know that OUR Democrates from AK are also dirty.
As i have said before Isaiah 1:23 does apply every where in our local, state and national govts, not all, but many.

The Obama administration had

The Obama administration had nothing to do with setting aside Stevens's conviction. It was Judge Sullivan. He found prosecutors had knowingly allowed false testimony and hid exculpatory evidence (that's stuff that suggests innocence).

Stevens was Alaska's best representation in history, and it's digging expeditions like this that kicked him out and made us end up with Begich - even though the trial ended up being a sham. Stevens would have opposed Obama, but Begich sides with him. Young opposes Obama, and it looks like someone wants to try the same trick against him, so they can sneak in another democratic victory despite what voters want. What a coincidence they strike on election year again!

jimh respectfully

Jim, respectfully I wish to correct you. The Obama administration was directly responsible for vacating the conviction:

"On behalf of U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Paul O'Brien submitted a "Motion of The United States To Set Aside The Verdict And Dismiss The Indictment With Prejudice" in connection with case No. 08-231 early on April 1, 2009. Federal judge Emmet G. Sullivan soon signed the order, and since it occurred prior to sentencing it had the effect of vacating Stevens's conviction."

Since Eric Holder is the Attorney General, that would make him a direct member of the administration. And since the motion was submitted on behalf of the Attorney General ... well you get the point. Please feel free to follow up with any fact I may have missed.

Any idea of just how much

Any idea of just how much money OUR President & ALL elected Democrates & Republicans have spent Illegally? Poor Burney Madoff, his ponsi scheme of Sharing Equally is minute compared to what OUR govt. is doing to all of us.
Yet what do we continually see? People like Ted, Don, Berney and other small fry money spenders getting the shaft, while the govt. breaks the banks.

Isaiah 1:23 fits here to a tee, all crooks and theives are elected rulers are, we a few exceptions possibly.

"Poor Burney Madoff ???"

"Poor Burney Madoff ???" REALLY? The amount missing from client accounts, including fabricated gains, was almost $65 billion!!! How was that "sharing equally." The average investor loss as a result of this mans greed was $1.27 million (based on simple losses of $19 billion). If every man woman and child paid their share of that Federal debt, it would come to about $50 thousand each (at $15 trillion). If they paid the higher national debt, ($53 trillion) that would still amount to about $175 thousand per person. Bernie wasn't so poor after all and definitely did not believe in "sharing equally."

My point was that we allow

My point was that we allow many dfifferant people to scam others out of Millions, even Billions each year and only a few are made examples of while OUR Govt. is the Biggest scammers ever and have gotten America into a situation where we will have to default and obtain someother form of currancy to be part of the Global Society, or OWO.
Burney got what he deserved, but what about John Corsine of MF Global from New Jersey that made off with Billions from his clients in his investment firm, as well as many other investment firms that are having their way with consumers money stealing it all with no fear from the Govt, but thats all ok?

Obama's Sharing Equally Dream Act is Trillions of times worse and it's against Every American as well as Every citizen of the World for his OWO.
May will usher in major troubles for the World i do believe. Will any listen to the MayDay call to prepare? Probably not as they really don't care or understand exactly what the Dream Act is all about for Global control of the World.
Have a GR8 Day, KK & buy Oil stocks for your future.
