Kasilof fish wheel fishery extended

A temporary fish wheel fishery established on the upper Kasilof River for residents of Ninilchik by the Federal Subsistence Board will be temporarily extended, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Monday.

According to a press release, the fishery expired by regulation on Dec. 31, 2011, but will be extended for 60 days starting July 1. The fishery will close at 11:59 p.m. August 29.

The extension will provide Ninilchik residents with the opportunity to operate one fish wheel in the upper Kasilof River until the Federal Subsistence Board meets in January 2013 to take up a proposal to allow fish wheels in permanent regulation.
