Knopp runs for State House seat against Olson, Wolf

Posted: May 25, 2012 - 7:50am

Gary Knopp, Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly president, will challenge incumbent Rep. Kurt Olson and former Juneau lawmaker Kelly Wolf for a seat in the Alaska Legislature this year.

Knopp filed his intent to run for the State Representative District 29 seat Wednesday with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. He will run as a Republican. Olson and Wolf are both running as Republicans.

The assembly veteran of six years said it is his first time running for state office. Knopp said a group of friends encouraged him to run for the seat. Among other things, Knopp said he wanted the legislature to double-check "implementation of regulations administratively without legislative oversight or input."

"If I am elected I'm going down there with realistic expectations -- I'm not moving the capital building, I'm not changing the world here," he said. "There are a lot of local issues I can support and should support representing these house districts, but there are a lot of state issues as well. So my plan is to work as hard as I can and learn as much as I can to support all those issues."

The deadline for candidates to file for the Aug. 28 primary election is June 1
