Trooper involved in highway shooting named

An Alaska Wildlife Trooper involved in a shooting on the Sterling Highway on Sunday has been identified by Alaska State Troopers.

 

Wildlife Trooper Trent Chwialkowski, a trooper since 2008 stationed at the Anchor Point post, shot and wounded a female driver Sunday after she refused to stop her vehicle near Happy Valley and fired a weapon at the trooper.

The driver’s name has not been released and her condition is not available.

Chwialkowski was placed on administrative leave for three days following the incident according to department policy. The shooting is still under investigation.

According to reports, troopers received multiple reports at 5:18 p.m. of a yellow SUV driving erratically on the highway. Chwialkowski spotted the SUV near Happy Valley at about 6:15 p.m. and attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver continued northbound. The SUV eventually stopped the female driver began shooting. 

Chwialkowski fired back, and the vehicle again took off. The female stopped her vehicle at Mile 147 in the middle of the highway, troopers reported.

Troopers from Soldotna and Anchor Point responded along with Homer Police Department and members of the South Central Special Emergency Response Team, and after 30 minutes the driver put her hands outside the SUV. They then made contact with the driver and discovered she had been shot in the torso, troopers reported. 

She was transported to a South Peninsula Hospital in Homer, troopers reported.
