Kalifornsky Beach Road re-opens following washout

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced Kalifornsky Beach Road in Kenai has been reopened to traffic at Milepost 11 following last week’s flood-related washout.

Receding floodwaters allowed the department’s work crews to begin constructing a by-pass around the washout area on Friday, according to a Department of Transportation press release.

Crews worked through the weekend and completed the by-pass, which re-established through-traffic on the road. The by-pass was built as a gravel-surfaced road with dual lanes for unrestricted use. Interim pilot cars operations will be in effect during an initial re-opening period while crews continue work on repairs, the press release says.

This route will remain in use until permanent repairs are made to the original alignment of the road. The department is preparing to bid the permanent repairs with a contract completion date of Nov. 15, the press release says.

Updates on road conditions can be found at the 511.alaska.gov website or by dialing 511 on your telephone.
