Senate majority announces committee positions

JUNEAU (AP) — The new Alaska state Senate majority has announced committee leadership positions.

Lawmakers already have announced some Senate leadership positions including Republicans Charlie Huggins of Wasilla as Senate president and John Coghill, R-North Pole, as Senate Majority Leader.

Leadership roles noted Monday for the upcoming session include Anchorage Republican Lesil McGuire as rules committee chair, Sitka Republican as chair of the Health and Social Services and Finance Committee co-chairs Kevin Meyer, R-Anchorage, and Pete Kelly, R-Fairbanks.

Republicans hold at least 13 seats in the 20-member Senate, whose 15-member majority includes two Democrats. Four other Democrats have not joined the majority or have not been asked to join.

The race between Anchorage Democrat Hollis French and Republican challenger Bob Bell remains too close to call, with French holding a slim lead.
