Crash seriously injures 2, closes Seward Highway

ANCHORAGE — Two people were critically injured in a crash that closed both lanes of the Seward Highway for nearly three hours and left 11 people injured.

Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters says the two-vehicle crash occurred Sunday afternoon three miles north of Girdwood. Troopers say a large SUV lost control because of snow and slush and crossed the center line and slammed into a smaller SUV.

KTUU quotes troopers as saying two people, including a child, in one vehicle were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, while two people in the other vehicle were seriously hurt. Some others in the vehicles were also taken to hospitals for injuries. The highway was reopened by 9 p.m.
