Slick roads cause numerous collisions

Posted: January 12, 2013 - 8:51pm

An inch of rainfall and temperatures hovering in the mid-30s were a recipe for disaster Saturday for drivers across the Kenai Peninsula and the state.

Alaska State Troopers responded to nine motor vehicle collisions, six vehicles in the ditch and four motorist requests for assistance in the area. As of press time, Kenai Police Department reported two accidents; Soldotna Police reported none.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said roads across southcentral Alaska were slick and caused numerous accidents of different severities.

Peters advised drivers to slow down and leave plenty of space between themselves and the car in front.

“You know where the intersections are, slow down way ahead of time,” she said. “With how much traffic flow is going over those common places, it is smoothing out the ice and it is making it very slippery. Plan on going slow and give yourself extra time when you leave for places ... and be cautious.”
