Soldotna's Davis takes X-Games silver

Soldotna’s Cory Davis surprised everyone with a silver medal in the Winter X-Games competition on Saturday in Aspen, Colo.

The 25-year-old snowmachiner, son of Iron Dog racer Scott Davis, lost the speed-and-style gold medal match to Levi LaVallee with a score of 90.95 to 85.66. The competition is based on both speed and style, with competitors often pulling off brilliant midair stunts.

Davis posted a tweet Saturday on his Twitter account that read, “Man I couldn’t be happier thanks everyone!!”

Davis defeated defending champion Joe Parsons in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to the final, and had posted the fastest qualifying time earlier in the day. The contest was a three-lap race on a course that featured numerous jumps, and the gold-medal race lasted less than three minutes.

The silver medal isn’t the first podium spot that Davis has snagged in his career. In both 2009 and 2011, Davis nabbed a bronze in the speed-and-style events.
