Soldotna man attempts to flee police in pickup, on foot

A 20-year-old Soldotna man is in custody after attempting to flee from local police who popped the pickup’s tires with a spike strip, which still did not halt the fleeing driver.

On Monday at 9:03 p.m., a Soldotna police officer tried to stop Jacob F. Graham’s 1990 Chevrolet pick up after spotting the vehicle speeding southbound on the Sterling Highway, the Soldotna Police Department reported.

Graham allegedly refused to stop and continued speeding south on the highway. An Alaska State Trooper laid a spike strip near Mile 100, and the pickup’s tires were deflated. The pickup continued to drive for another mile and a half at which point it went into the ditch, the police department reported.

Graham fled from the pickup on foot, but authorities apprehended the man following a “short foot pursuit.” He was arrested and charged with first-degree failure to stop at the direction of a peace officer, reckless driving and disorderly conduct. He later was served criminal citations for minor consuming alcohol and minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol, the police department reported.

A minor operating a vehicle after consuming alcohol charge can include a fine of $500 and mandatory community service of 20 to 40 hours, if it’s the offender’s first charge for the crime. First-degree failure to stop is a class C felony, which can include up to 5 years of jail time.

Graham pleaded no contest to minor consuming alcohol charges in 2006 and 2007, according to online court records.

He was taken to Wildwood Correction Complex and his pickup was impounded.
