Soldotna woman dies in Spur Highway accident

A Soldotna resident died Thursday on the Kenai Spur Highway when her car slid into oncoming traffic, according to an Alaska State Troopers.

 

Shelby Gillins, 21, was driving northbound at about 7:53 a.m. when she lost control of her 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and slid into the oncoming lane at Mile 3.5, near Pickle Hill. Kenai resident Sharon Efta, 56, T-boned Gillins’ sideways car. Gillins was declared dead on the scene.

Troopers report that Efta, who was driving a Ford Windstar minivan, was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The highway following the accident and reopened at about 11:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing.
