Accidental pistol discharge injures two Soldotna men

Posted: May 12, 2013 - 11:56am  |  Updated: May 12, 2013 - 8:59pm

A 23-year-old Soldotna man accidentally discharged a handgun Saturday, injuring himself and a 22-year-old man, Alaska State Troopers reported. Both men were transported to different hospitals for treatment.

Troopers responded to an accidental shooting call about 3:15 p.m. on King Salmon Avenue. Investigation revealed that Zackary Moore, 23, “was attempting to disassemble his .45 caliber Springfield Armory semi-auto handgun in the front passenger seat of a Jeep Grand Cherokee when he fired one shot striking himself and his friend, Arnold Sipes, 22, who was seated in the driver’s seat,” troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email.

Moore was treated at Central Peninsula Hospital for his injuries while Sipes was flown to an Anchorage hospital for his injuries, troopers reported. Their conditions and the locations of their injuries were not available as of press time Sunday night.

Although investigation is continuing, troopers reported that alcohol was not a factor in the incident.

Tustumena Lake makes for three

The 16 year old that shot his leg on Saturday made the count of three shot by negligence in one day. Do we need learner permits for firearms? All three will have lifetime reminders of the need for weapon safety. Please heal quickly and learn even quicker.

I hope you were not being serious.

I can't tell Suss - were you being serious? Learner permits? I sure hope not.

So the news media highlighted two stupid people's activity. Of course this was done because firearms were involved. I would bet there were other people that injured themselves and/or others on the same day, but it was not newsworthy because firearms were not involved.

We don't need more government control, we need more personal responsibility. 'Permits' will never fix 'stupid'.

Learner's Permit

Seriously, learner permits for drinking alcohol, sex and pregnancy, drug use, voting, pet ownership, internet usage, lawn mowing, golfing, baseball, swimming, chain sawing and any and all other potentially harmful activity imaginable. Or we could try that old fashioned archaic concept called parenting.

I learned how to handle a gun

I learned how to handle a gun through my father and an NRA program we had when I was a kid. The first thing I was taught was to treat a gun like it is ALWAYS loaded,no matter what, always be aware of where it is pointed and to never aim it at any thing I didn't intend to shoot.

Follow the instructions!

I know there isn't a manufacture putting any rifle, pistol, or shotgun out on the market w/o instructions. Make sure the weapon is unloaded before attempting disassembly!! Before they hand you a weapon in US Army Basic Training trainees sit and watch about 2 or 3 hr. of film covering not only weapon function, assembly and care. But also Range rules and taboos. #1 is have your head in the game not up your @*%!
But why is there no press for the 12 year old Montana girl who while home alone defended herself from 2 armed illegal aliens. These guys had robbed and murdered a homeowner two days and two miles away. They were armed with a pistol stolen from that murdered neighbor. FOX News mentioned it but no other network wants to show the good side of gun ownership.
