Nikiski resident to seek assembly seat

Nikiski resident Wayne Ogle on Monday announced his candidacy for the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly District 3 seat currently held by Ray Tauriainen.

According to a press release, Ogle is a retired U.S. Coast Guard captain and a former regulatory permit manager for an oil industry offshore engineering company based in Houston. Now retired, Ogle was also previously the public works director in Bethel and Kenai.

“I want to continue Ray’s work in representing Nikiski as a common sense conservative, especially in fiscal matters,” Ogle said in the release.

Tauriainen is one of three assembly members with terms that will expire this October, along with Brent Johnson and Assembly President Linda Murphy. Tauriainen said Wednesday night he would not seek re-election.

Ogle complimented Tauriainen’s work as an assemblyman and said he talked with him about his candidacy.

Over the last six months, Ogle worked closely with the Citizens for Responsible Waterfront Land Use group that sought to repeal the recent anadromous waters habitat protection district expansion and attended several meetings to voice concerns about private property rights.

He said he has long been interested in borough government and would like to continue working on issues facing the assembly such as fiscal notes, video recordings of meetings and alternative management of solid waste. He said he would also like to work on tightening the borough’s budget.
