Soldotna filing period opens, three seats available

Candidate filing period for Soldotna City Council seats opens 9 a.m. Thursday.

Application packets were made available Wednesday at the city clerk’s office and on the city’s website. Filing deadline is 4:30 p.m. Aug. 15.

Eligible candidates must be a qualified city voter as well as a city resident for one year on the date of declaration of candidacy, Shellie Saner, Soldotna city clerk said.

Three seats need to be filled at the October election, Seat B for a one-year term and Seats D and E for three-year terms, she said.

Seat B was made vacant at a July 24 city council meeting when the council approved council member and vice mayor Brenda Hartman’s resignation. Hartman resigned because she is moving to Oregon, but said she plans to apply to fill the seat until the October election.

Saner said applications to serve as the Seat B council member until the October election must be received by the city by 11 a.m. Aug. 8.

Candidates for this seat will be interviewed at the 6 p.m. Aug. 14 city council meeting. A new vice mayor will also be selected at the upcoming meeting.

Toward the end of the July 24 council meeting, Seat E council member, Nancy Eoff, announced she will not be running for another term in October because she will be traveling and it would not be “very fair to the city to have a vacant seat,” Eoff said.
