Flood advisory issued for portions of the Kenai River

The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a flood advisory until Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the Kenai River from Skilak Lake.

According to the advisory, the Kenai River downstream of Skilak Lake has been rising steadily for the past five days and could rise above flood stage in certain spots on Sunday before cresting Tuesday evening.

The rate that the Kenai River has been rising appears to be greater than what would be expected by recent rain and it is likely that the Skilak Glacier dam lake is releasing according to the advisory.

However, the only way to verify that the dam lake is releasing would be to fly over it and weather conditions during the past few days have prevented researchers from doing so, according to the release.

By 10 a.m. Saturday a gauge at the Kenai Keys showed the river height to be at 10.85 feet, flood stage is 11 feet. In Soldotna, the river was measured at 10.55 feet and flood stage is 12 feet.

An increase of more than a foot  is expected in both places, putting them at risk of flooding and prompting the weather service to warn residents downstream from Skilak Lake to take precaution while in low-lying areas, report minor flooding to local law enforcement and move things to higher ground.
