Arrest made in Jones Street standoff

Posted: August 21, 2013 - 4:27pm  |  Updated: August 21, 2013 - 10:43pm

Alaska State Troopers have arrested an individual wanted for domestic violence charges following an hours-long standoff in Soldotna.

The incident started at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when troopers tried to serve James M. Cook, 42, with a warrant for kidnapping and multiple felony assault charges.

Cook was uncooperative and troopers responded to the scene with the Tactical Response Vehicle and Special Emergency Reponse Team personnel. Central Emergency Services was stationed nearby during the approximately 6-hour incident.

The house directly off Jones Street was surrounded by troopers by 4:35 p.m., according to authorities at the scene.

Cook initially fired a single shot at the armored vehicle, trooper spokesperson Megan Peters said.

Lt. Dane Gilmore said troopers did not fire any shots, Cook fired three to four shots during the course of the standoff.

Troopers released a few different chemical agents into the house that were not harmful, but make the air in the area they are released uncomfortable encouraging the suspect to vacate the home, Gilmore said.

"If we didn't have the tools we did, (the situation) would have likely ended with deadly force," Gilmore said.

Jones Street was closed until just after 9 p.m.

No one was injured during the standoff.

There was a trooper sitting

There was a trooper sitting at Gas Well and Jones starting at least as early at 8:30 this morning.

And kids were still getting dropped off by buses this afternoon...

Kids buses

My kids ride two different buses which were detoured and the children brought back to their schools where I picked them up. I live on Jones road about a block and a half away from this trailer. Kinda scary since a lot of kids walk down Jones road past this mans home from Gaswell everyday after school.
