Kenai council talks capital projects and coldwater egress

Posted: September 4, 2013 - 8:30pm

Kenai City Council scheduled tonight a meeting for Sept. 18 to mull its capital projects priority list and passed a resolution supporting the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska’s development of a coldwater survival egress training facility.

City Manager Rick Koch said the bluff erosion project will be — as it has been in past years — the city’s top capital project priority. He will also likely request $1 million for annual street upgrades, he said. Council members will discuss other potential projects at the meeting, but Koch expects few other major capital projects for the coming year, he said.

Koch said state legislators will likely attend the meeting.

Said Marnie Olcott, CEO of the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska, the center’s training program boosts the city’s economy each year when it bring to the center trainees, many of whom stay in city hotels and eat at city restaurants. The center processed more than 900 trainees last year, she said.

The new training facility the center proposes will allow the program to accept more trainees, she said.
