Advisory meeting starts discussion of school names, mascots, colors

The Soldotna Area Schools Advisory Committee met for the second time Tuesday to discuss topics such as school names, colors and mascots.

A 14-person advisory committee made up of students, staff and site council members met in the Soldotna Middle School library to discuss cultural and historic issues involved in the upcoming Soldotna Schools Reconfiguration.

Doug Hayman, Transition Facilitator for the committee, separated the committee into four groups, with a student at each table, so the groups could discuss the issues and come up with ideas.

Two groups shared their ideas. One group proposed changing the school names while keeping the same mascots and colors. The other group also liked the idea of keeping the names similar, keeping both the Soldotna High and Skyview names and mascots.

Hayman said the first agenda item for the Oct. 8 meeting will be sharing the other groups’ ideas and then discussing where both schools historic items will be housed.
