1 dead in late-night crash

A single vehicle accident on the Kenai Spur Highway near Lupine Drive late Monday night resulted in one fatality.
 
The driver of the vehicle, Gavin Koester-Backstrom, 28, of Kenai, was pronounced dead on scene, Kenai Police Sgt. Ben Langham said.
 
Kenai Police and Kenai Fire Department responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle crash at 11:53 p.m.
 
“While we were on scene it appeared that a black Nissan Pathfinder was traveling toward Soldotna when it left the roadway,” Langham said.
 
Koester-Backstrom was the only person in the vehicle, Langham said.
 
Langham said the driver’s girlfriend told him there might have been a dog in the vehicle with Koester-Backstrom, and the dog is still missing to Langham’s knowledge.
 
Police spoke with several witnesses on scene, but encourage anyone with information to contact police at 283-7879.
 
The cause of the accident is under investigation, Langham said.
