Natural gas safety valve release draws response

At approximately 2:40 p.m. Monday, the Kenai Fire Department blocked the intersection of the Kenai Spur Highway and Main Street Loop in response to a safety valve releasing natural gas pressure at the City Gate facility, a convergence of natural gas lines.

According to Kenai Fire Chief Michael Tilly, a loud whistle and vapor alerted those nearby of a safety valve that opened to allow the release of excess pressure.

Tilly said the intersection was blocked off as a precaution until Buccaneer Alaska Operations LLC arrived on scene.

Phone calls to Buccaneer Alaska Operations LLC inquiring about the event were not returned Monday afternoon.
