Soldotna City Council has busy night

Posted: March 26, 2014 - 9:12pm  |  Updated: March 26, 2014 - 9:16pm

Soldotna City Council postponed voting on an ordinance that would prohibit synthetic drugs, including spice and bath salts, at the meeting on Wednesday.

Since it was introduced at last month's meeting the state Legislature has proposed a bill that would make the drugs illegal statewide, said City Manager Mark Dixon. The Council agreed to wait until the next meeting and hear whether the bill passes in the Senate and House of Representatives.

Mayor Nels Anderson made an official proclamation stating Soldotna would recognize the week of May 11 as Kenai River Spring Clean Up, at Council Member Keith Baxter’s request.

The Council voted unanimously in favor of having an elected Soldotna High School student representative on the Council. The student would have a right to an advisory vote on council motions, Anderson said.

For the first half of this week’s meeting the room exceeded maximum capacity with the influx of local support over the proposition of Soldotna buying the Birchwood Golf Course, and potentially leasing out managerial responsibilities. Residents from 12 to 81 voiced pleas for the city to help keep the course open.
