Senate hopeful asks foe to help end attack ads

Posted: June 10, 2014 - 10:00pm

JUNEAU — Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Dan Sullivan said Tuesday that he supports the U.S. Supreme Court decision that allowed unlimited spending by unions and corporations in political races even as he proposed a way to curb outside influence in his contest.

Sullivan called on Democratic Sen. Mark Begich to sign a pledge asking special interest groups to stop TV and radio ads by July 4 that support or attack their campaigns. If they don’t stop, his pledge says the candidate benefiting from the ads must contribute half the amount of the ad buy to a charity his opponent chooses.

Begich spokesman Max Croes called Sullivan’s comments hypocrisy. Campaign manager Susanne Fleek-Green said in a statement that if Sullivan wins his primary, “it will be a stark contrast between his put-corporations-first position and Senator Begich’s support for real campaign finance reform, including support of a constitutional amendment throwing out Citizens United,” the 2010 court ruling.

The campaign did not directly say whether Begich would sign the pledge.

There is much at stake in the race — Republicans have focused on Alaska as critical to their efforts to win control of the U.S. Senate. It’s also the state’s first major race in the era of super political action committees.

During a conference call with reporters, Sullivan, a former state attorney general, was asked about the Citizens United decision and said he was a strong supporter of the First Amendment and was not trying to limit free speech with his proposal.

Sullivan said in a follow-up call with The Associated Press and in a campaign tweet that he supported the court decision but that his proposal wasn’t about that.

“It’s about how Mark Begich and I are going to conduct this race,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan singled out Begich for the pledge, modeled on the “People’s Pledge” signed by Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Elizabeth Warren in the contentious 2012 Massachusetts U.S. Senate race. It helped limit attack ads on the airwaves, but groups turned to mass mailings. The race was still the most expensive in Massachusetts’ history.

Sullivan still must beat his August primary opponents, including Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and Joe Miller, the 2010 GOP Senate nominee in a race that Republican Lisa Murkowski won with a write-in campaign.

Sullivan told reporters that he and Begich so far have been singled out for attacks by third-party groups. Outside ads have been a fixture on Alaska airwaves for months, and groups have reported reserving millions of dollars in air time ahead of the elections. Sullivan said he and Begich are the only candidates who can put a stop to it.

Leading gubernatorial candidates have complained about the difficulty of buying air time because the airwaves are crowded with ads for the Senate race and an August ballot question to repeal Alaska’s new oil tax structure, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported.

Under the pledge, outside groups have incentive to stand down because the campaigns would be penalized if the ads continued, said Sean Cairncross, a Sullivan campaign attorney and former counsel to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Sullivan shares a name with Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan, who is running for lieutenant governor as a Republican.

Sullivan isn't an Alaskan

Not only that, he wishes to shut Alaskan citizens out of the public policy process.

Sullivan should go back to Maryland. He listed his residence there to avoid taxes, yet he came up here and voted, registering as a Republican, but then living and claiming residence in Maryland.

Sullivan doesn't like ads that show his true colors.

Begich = Obama

Anyone but Begich.

Begich is a liberal who was the key vote for ObamaCare.

The big-spending Federal Government is destroying the American Dream with over-reach, higher taxes and deficits.

Getting rid of Begich is a good start in taking back our state and nation.

The Deciding Vote

I am a LIBERAL,and a fact of which I am proud. Sen. Begich was NOT the key vote for The Affordable Care Act as claimed by some. Because The Democrat Senator Mark Pryor from the state of Arkansas is being designated that culprit by the REPUBLICAN Political advertisements in that state. There are such advertisement claims by the Republican Party in numerous state Senator campaigns. So! Just Who was the person. That had cast that deciding vote? Or is this another Republican urban legend? How can one take back a state? First! Do not allow the oil corporations to dictate the way. Alaska handles it's Natural Resources. The State of Alaska, and it's citizen's should receive the greater part of the fair share. When one is helping the politicians give the state away by reelecting the people irresponsible, and unaccountable for the selling out of this state, and it's citizen's. Now! This is what destroys the American Dream

Begich is far from being a liberal.

He is a Democrat but not even a left leaning Democrat, he's a moderate.

He's likely as not to be rated a bit right of center, but in today's extremist right wing mindset, that equates to being a 'librul'.

Most right wing extremists wouldn't know how to define a liberal, or a progressive or a moderate, they only know their own extremism and if you don't go along with that craziness, well then, you're branded a 'librul'.

But let's get back to out of stater Sullivan and let's talk about his problems. He was a member of the Bush administration, an administration that created the largest failures in the last 20 years if not more.

As we talk of a Bush administration lackey attempting to pass himself off as an Alaskan, Iraq is descending into the kind of chaos that the Bush administration said couldn't happen.

Remember when the Iraqis were going to strew flowers before us as we invaded?

Remember how the war wasn't going to cost taxpayers anything?

Hundreds of thousands of deaths later, and billions upon billions of taxpayer dollars later, the Bush administration has been proven to be populated with failures and buffoons.

Sullivan can go back to Maryland, we don't need Bush buffoons here.

Barry Goldwater

Begich is no more liberal than Barry Goldwater was. Even the Republican deity Ronald Regan would be considered a liberal,or a moderate at best and wouldn't get elected in todays political nightmare.
It is interesting that all the presidents on Mount Rushmore were liberals.
We need a third party in this country,I wouldn't caught dead belonging to either of the current parties. A party that represents the silent majority, moderates, and not the screaming nut bags on either end of the political spectrum.

Begich = Mega-Liberal

I find it funny when union lackey and government losers say Begich is not a liberal.

The liberal press said the same thing about Obama and he's turned out to be part socialist and part communist, still a liberal.

Begich was a mean-spirited assemblyman in Anchorage, and his behavior in DC has established him as the worst Senator in the history of Alaska.

Remember, Begich won based on a lie, which seems fitting for him.

You spew more lies than faux

You spew more lies than faux news. You must be miserable since your man has lost in the last 2 election cycles. Did it ever occur to you that you just might be in the minority with your way of thinking?
I hope Begich wins again just so we can hear you rant and rave for another 6 years.
By the way, I suggest you re-listen to the taped conversation between Uncle Ted and Bill Allen. Apparently you have a short memory. Seems uncle ted stated,"Whats the worst they can do to us bill? send us to prison for a couple years? We gotta stick together on this......

Ted Stevens got off on a technicality is all, his own words proved his guilt. Time you learn the facts instead of regurgitating the same ol falsehoods.

Ted Stevens admitted his corruption.

We'd do well to vote out the rest of the corrupt politicians who were exposed during the VECO trials. Not all of the corrupt politicians got indicted, the least we could do is vote them out.

As to Sullivan and Begich, Begich is an effective Alaska Senator.

Sullivan isn't even an Alaskan.

Begich Mean-Spirited Liberal - Not An Alaskan

When Begich lost a mayoral bid in Anchorage, he had the worst meltdown in history. He blamed vast right-wing conspiracies and the Anchorage Baptist Temple. It was an embarrassment but it showed his true nature - he does not hunt, he does not fish, he does nothing but politics.

Begich was the key vote for Obamacare - socialized medicine. Cost are up, choices are down. Americans are headed towards the kind of government care given at the VA hospitals.

Begich deserves our disgust, not our votes. Unless of course you're on the big-government dole - then vote for Begich.

Health care costs are down significantly.

Some people just refuse to allow reality to impinge on the ideological fog they've chosen to cloak themselves in.
