Dead inmate identified

An altercation between two inmates resulted in the death of one man Sunday night.

Elihu Gillespie, 29, suffered fatal injuries from a fight with his cellmate at Spring Creek Correctional Center in Seward.

Alaska State Troopers responded to the prison at about 1:30 a.m. Gillespie was transported to Providence Seward Medical and Care Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m.

Trooper spokesperson Beth Ipsen said the name of the accused cellmate would not be released until charges have been filed.

According to court records, Gillespie was convicted of murder in the second-degree in 2009 and was serving a 50-year sentence with 29 years suspended.

Next of kin have been notified. The case is under investigation.
