Borough provides dumpsters for fire damage relief

Two large dumpsters will be available for those affected by the Card Street fire, courtesy of the Kenai Peninsula Borough.

The dumpsters will be placed near Trout Lane and Feuding Lane from July 11 through July 25, according to a media release from the Borough. Only small, household debris is allowed in the dumpsters.

Community and Fiscal Projects Manager Brenda Ahlberg said larger items are not allowed because they will fill the dumpsters too fast.

“We want to keep that to a minimum… because those canisters are going to fill up quickly even with small things,” she said.

No hazardous, woody or construction debris is permitted in the dumpsters either, according to the release. The Central Peninsula Landfill will be accepting those types of items on July 18, and Ahlberg said residents should take advantage of that collection.

“It’s a matter of safety, really,” Ahlberg said. “We’re trying to help (people) out to remediate some of their damage. We also want to make sure it’s done in a safe and protective manner.”

Ahlberg said a second waste collection site will be in place on Alamo Street early next week. She emphasized that the dumpsters are not for general use, and only residents affected by the fire should use them. Those who need to dispose of cars affected by the fire should contact Peninsula Scrap and Salvage, according to the release.

Residents can visit www.kpb.us/swd-waste for a comprehensive list of the materials allowed in the dumpsters.
