Update 6:30 p.m.
Alaska State Troopers say a man shot by troopers Wednesday afternoon was in the process of being arrested on a felony warrant.
Troopers from the Soldotna post got a tip that there was a man with a felony arrest warrant at a house in Nikiski, and the man “drove a vehicle at a trooper” while officers tried to take him into custody, troopers wrote in an online dispatch report.
“Multiple troopers fired upon the suspect,” troopers wrote. “The man was subsequently transported from the scene to receive treatment.”
No troopers were injured during the shooting, and each trooper that fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave according to department policy, the dispatch states.
“The names of the troopers will be released at the conclusion of the administrative leave,” troopers wrote.
Original story:
Alaska State Troopers are responding to an officer-involved shooting in Nikiski.
The Nikiski Fire Department was called out to the incident in the Island Lake Road area off the Kenai Spur Highway around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Deputy Chief Trent Burnett. First responders transported one injured patient, he said, who was then transferred to LifeMed. Burnett did not have additional details.
A trooper on scene said the Alaska Bureau of Investigations, a branch of the troopers, is investigating the shooting. Megan Peters, public information officer for the troopers, said this is the section of the Alaska State Troopers that handles trooper-involved shooting incidents.
“ABI is the unit within our department that does investigate those,” she said.
This is a developing story. More details will be posted as they become available.
