Nikiski firefighters were kept busy Tuesday and into Wednesday morning with two house fires.
First responders from the Nikiski Fire Department were first called out to a structure off of Island Lake Road shortly after noon Tuesday. There they found what appeared to be a chimney fire that had spread to the roof, said Nikiski Fire Deputy Chief Trent Burnett.
Firefighters used an engine and two tankers to quickly subdue that blaze, Burnett said. No one was injured. Later that day, they were called to another fire off of Sunset Street in Nikiski at around 9:40 p.m., he said.
No one was home at the time of the fire, Burnett said, so the firefighters focused on putting it out from outside the structure. They used an engine, two tankers and an engine called from the Kenai Fire Department.
The second fire was under control by 11:36 p.m. Tuesday night, though Burnett said firefighters were still inspecting it and watching for hot spots Wednesday.
“We ended up clearing that scene at about 2:30 in the morning … and we’re still looking at it today,” he said.
The cause of that fire is still under investigation, Burnett said.
