Trooper involved in shooting identified

The Alaska State Troopers have released the name of the trooper who shot a man during a Dec. 23 standoff in Soldotna.


Lt. Dane Gilmore, Deputy Commander of E Detachment, shot a man after he allegedly pointed a handgun at law enforcement officers from the back of a patrol car, according to a dispatch released Tuesday.

The man, who had been picked up by a trooper following a report of a “suspicious male on private property walking into the woods,” produced a handgun while in the back of the vehicle, according to a Dec. 23 dispatch. A response team was unable to convince the man to put down the firearm. Gilmore shot the man at approximately 5:06 p.m., after he aimed the gun toward officers, according to the Dec. 23 dispatch.

The man was injured but alive and transported to Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment.

Troopers release name of driver killed in Christmas car crash

Alaska State Troopers identified Anchorage man Gary A. Barnett, 47, as the driver involved in a fatal Christmas Day car accident along the Seward Highway, according to an online dispatch. At approximately 12:11 p.m., troopers received a report of an upside down ‘94 maroon Honda sedan on the side of the highway near Upper Trail Lake. Barnett, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was declared dead on the scene. The investigation in the crash is ongoing.

Fairbanks residents allegedly flee scene of Anchor Point accident

A Fairbanks woman received a summons, and another man was charged, for allegedly making a false report following a single-vehicle rollover near Anchor Point this weekend, according to an online dispatch released by the Alaska State Troopers. Troopers responded to the crash, which took place on North Fork Road near Lichen Street, at approximately 12:16 a.m. on Dec. 25. The alleged driver, Iris Strongheart, 18, and the vehicle’s passengers fled the scene on foot, according to the dispatch. After being located by the troopers, Strongheart and passenger Logan Lucas, 23, reported that a third person had been driving when the crash happened, the dispatch stated.

Strongheart later admitted to driving, according to the dispatch. Strongheart was given a summons for making a false report and failing to report a crash. Lucas was charged with making a false report, according to the dispatch.
