On Tuesday, voters should rule the day

Posted: September 28, 2012 - 5:29pm  |  Updated: October 1, 2012 - 8:18am

While many voters are passionate about politics at the national and state levels, many might not realize how great of an impact local and municipal government and politics have on our day-to-day lives.

This is evident in voting statistics — presidential elections compared to local elections are like high school football bleachers compared to National Football League stadiums.

On Tuesday, however, we have a chance to fill those seats. On Tuesday the ballot box will open and each and every voter will have the chance to shape local government on an immediate level. On Tuesday, the fate of many borough and city issues are up for grabs.

If history is any indicator, less than 20 percent of registered voters will go to the ballot box. Does that mean less than only one out of every five people in the area cares about what goes on?

We doubt it. Maybe those voters who stay home on election day aren’t aware that the folks they aren’t voting on are in charge of many contentious local issues — the anadromous streams habitat ordinance, property taxes, the Kenai dipnet fishery, growth and expansion of Soldotna, education on across the Peninsula — just to name a few.

They say if you don’t vote, you can’t complain. We’d agree.

Many of these local officials are at the front lines of government — when you have an issue, want to make a change, or want to advance a cause, these are the people you’ll see first. These folks will help shape and guide the education our children receive. These are also the people that will represent our interests at the state level, and that means roads, capital projects and a number of other things we don’t think about until we need them.

If you already planned to head to the ballot box and don’t need any convincing, we’d take this chance to nudge you one step further and do a last few minutes of research on the candidates. Voting is a privilege, but being an educated voter makes you a community asset.

Also, ask your co-workers if they need a ride to the ballot box, encourage your family to register to vote and thank others you see with an “I Voted Today” sticker such as yourself.

Here’s where you can go vote:

Central — Soldotna Sports Center

Funny River 1 — Funny River Community Center

Funny River 2 — KPB Assembly Chambers

K-Beach — Kalifornsky Beach Fire Station

Kasilof — Kasilof Fire Station

Kenai No. 1 — Kenai Mall (Old Carrs Mall)

Kenai No. 3 — Kenai Senior Center

Mackey Lake — KPB Assembly Chambers

Nikiski — Nikiski Senior Center

Ninilchik — Ninilchik Senior Center

Salamatof — Nikiski Fire Hall No. 1

Soldotna — Soldotna City Hall

Sterling 1 — CES Sterling Fire Station

Sterling 2 — Sterling Baptist Church

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Here are the candidates, one last time:

Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly —

Kalifornsky, District 1, three-year term:

■ Kelly Wolf

■ Michael Winegarden

■ Christine Hutchison

Please vote Tuesday

I agree please vote on Tuesday and also please research the candidates for your self and not go by Movie reviews.
Very interesting article with a few interesting phrases which seem odd to me considering it's the Clarion writing this.
I like the part of if you don't vote then you can't complain and how the Clarion agrees. Please allow to carry this comment a little further in relation to what i have seen of late from the Clarion about voters complaining ok?
I vote and i don't appreciate how the Clarion allows it's staff to promote their false messiahs and false views of true historic facts concerning what they have and have not done for ALL the people as the make referance about said messiahs.
Yet those of us that do vote, but not for their chosen one are restricted from comments because we don't worship the very same candidate we are shut down from making our comments or complaining about the absolute one sided views coming from the Clarion.
Then there is the supposed concern for Children and education along with many differant issues and we should be aware of what candidates have planned for theirs and our future for our state.
What about our children and everyones future America wide when considering President, that does not count i suppose?

Absolutely Amazing the double talk in regard to state and national elections.

Please vote on Tuesday as it really is the only vote that we can make that really matters because by the time the Presidential election comes around, if we make it that far, it will be all over and OUR votes will not matter one single bit to determine OUR States future or OUR Nations future either and we will either proceed at warp speed under Obama towards that cliff or slightly slow down slightly before going off that cliff under Romney.

Either way folks we are going off that cliff and you had all better prepare for it in spite of how Glorious the Clarion Staff and other Obama worshipers try to make OUR Nations future look.

Please vote it might be your last free election in this rapidly changing Highly Religious Politically motivated World controled by UnFair and UnBalanced reporting of Historic Facts pushing for their desired agendas, Politicians to believe in.

The truest sentence of the editorial

"Voting is a privilege, but being an educated voter makes you a community asset."
People will do more research on a new high dollar purchase than on the issues that most affect them and their ability to make that purchase again in the future. Strange, but true!

You address three things here.
#1) Freedom of choice! You may choose what newspapers you read or don't read. All newspapers are going to deliver "fair and balanced reporting" as they see it.
#2) Freedom of the press. They print the truth as they see it. If you don't like this version of the truth, see #1.
#3)Freedom of religious affiliation.

Their views may be false in your eyes. But it is their right to publish their view whether you agree with it or not.
These are all rights you are in support of when you execise your basic right of the vote.

I know that Sam BUT!

That is all true Sam but to pretend that they are fair and balanced when it's pain to see that their not, is being untruthful.
Make no mistake i appreciate this forum we have on the Clarion, but at the same time i say come on in regard to the supposed movie reviews that are nothing but a slamming of Clint over his telling the truth.
Obama is missing in action as President and commander in Chief at every turn about Foriegn policy and supposed democracy pushing in the middle east, while the ONLY Democracy, Israel is being squeezed into a very small box with a short fuse, growing shorter daily.
The blatant SACRIFICE of Stevens and the 3 other Americans and subsicuent LIBYA GATE cover up is outragious or absolute incompitance by Obama's White House.
It is the Clarions rights to do as they wish as far as reporting news, but with the majority of people able to see reality of Obama's Dream, Nightmare for Am,erica it is very risky to say the least for them to be so one sided.

I studied the candidates again tonight and did not gain much ground on the new ones positions about anything. But thats not so bad as i do know alot about the other USUAL CAREER POLITICIANS and that is enough to vote against them and for the New person, persons.

ONLY 32 VOTERS AT 11:45

I was #32 at 11:45 at the sports center and i was all alone in there marking Write in's oval instead of voting for the career politicians.

This lack of voters could be due to the fear that Obama will win reelection and know his Dream act will totally strip all work place employment other than the Govts. UNION ONE controlers.
I don't know what the reason was but i voted so SPW has to listen to me now, because he said he would listen to anyone who votes, and i did.
This very well could have been OUR last chance to vote in a FREE NATIONS ELECTION FOR ANYTHING and i hope we do make it till November, but it's not looking good as we see the Very Bitter Islamic Winter spreading world wide at warp speed.

I don't think voters Ruled very well

I don't think voters Ruled very well on Tuesday or even showed up to vote. Why? Could it possibly be that voters can read the writing on the White House wall of America's NON-Future if Obama wins and continues on the distructive course we are on now? Could it be that people are starting to RUE the day they ever voted for this false messiah that has increased hopelessness instead of hope?
Very sad the turn out yesterday by voters Caring for the Kenai.
Thanks to all that did vote for the very limited choices, all of which caused me to vote write in instead of the single choices, which could have also contributed to the lack of voter turn out as people realized there was really no races to be decided locally and a large turn out was not needed.

I don't know why the lack of voters and wonder if the same will happen on Nov. 6th as well since the election will all but be over by the time Alaskans get to vote.

Stop the madness

Sen. McCain said it best: "When anyone, not least a member of Congress, launches specious and degrading attacks against fellow Americans on the basis of nothing more than fear of who they are and ignorance of what they stand for, it defames the spirit of our nation, and we all grow poorer because of it." This isn't a Democrat vs. Republican issue. It's about defending all of our values.

VERY GOOD SUSS

I realize that many over look this truth as my main point of it does not matter which political party rules because they are all designed and geared towards Dividing Americans and bringing down OUR Soverign Nation with OUR Freedoms which cannot exist in a World order, Global Union of ALL nations under one.
Alaska is in a unique place being this far off, but troubles are coming and Alaskans need to be helping other Alaskans prepare for the coming troubles ment to fundamentally change America, DIVIDE AMERICA, either by Civil war or Revolution, i do believe.
Alaskans need to realize that by the time we vote it will already have been decided as to which direction we will all go.
So in reguard to reality of OUR situation as Alaskans we need to allow free speach of others in a respectful manner in spite of the many differant AMAZING VIEWS OF REALITY others may express. Big Govt. could care less about any of us other than to amass people that would force others into their desired Global Union of Sheeple.
Very soon Alaskans will only have other Alaskans to depend on for survival against this coming tide, tsunami, for Global control and dominance of all by a single Govt. just as Revelation 13; says would come some day.

Thanks for the post Suss.

Waste of $$$

Here's why I didn't bother to vote in this local election (and I always vote)... I got my sample ballot in the voter pamphlet and look down the list to see that there are zero ballot measures and not a single contested seat on the entire list. Yep, one name for each seat. Since I would have had to vote by absentee due to being at work on election day, I chose not to waste the efforts of our tax dollars by submitting a ballot that has but one option for each of a handful of board seats.

The last election day and the next election day are the important ones. The recent local ballot was a joke. If no one is willing to step up and challenge the seats, then I find no reason to vote for the unchallenged incumbents.

Yeah we are all growing poorer, cause no one would expose the ‘values’ of BHO. His communist family, his socialist ideology.
McCain was a weak, fumbling decrepit that didn’t fight for the Presidency & he lost. Americans fight for their sovereignty & freedom despite their fear.

You write of ‘values’ - Core American Values
Our laws ARE designed to PROTECT our values.
The U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights did protect Values.

— The first 10 Amendments are the “BILL of RIGHTS”

— 1. Speech, religion, assembly, press

— 6. Speedy trial, representation

— 8. Cruel, unusual punishment
— 9. All individual rights may not be listed
— 10. Powers not specifically given to the Federal government are reserved to the states or individual
— 11. Clearly defines original jurisdiction of Supreme Court
— 12. Electoral College for selecting President / Vice President
— 13. Abolished slavery

Money for Votes, Interesting

SPW your idea implies that if Americans don't vote AND that they are not Americans is hard to comprehind.
Your idea of no vote, no PFD is also very hard to comprehind as well.
Lets carry it one step further in line with your beliefs about voters or nonvoters AND AMERICANS and say that if voters don't vote Democratic then they don't get PFD's or any other form of earned monitary benifits or free hand outs either.
Your ideals look & sound like a forced allegiance to a political system no matter who is running the country or state, all of which History shows leads to really bad outcomes for almost everyone, even those who are accepted as Good Citizens, unless i'm misjudging your words and intent.
Thats exactly the same kind of Democracy being spread in ALL Muslims natins right now, except for the OIL RICH ARAB MONARCH ONES. So how is that form of Democracy working out in the Middle East with your rules of Democracy there SPW? Answer: NOT GOOD AT ALL WITH REVOLUTIONS OR CIVIL UNREST RAGING IN ALL OF THEM.

If it will make you Democrates Happy, SPW and others and help you to start listening to my Warnings i have decided REPENT FOR MY FALLING AWAY and to come back into the fold of Democrates from which i fled yrs ago. PLEASE FORGIVE MY SIN.
Since i can't beat you, i'll rejoin you as a Democrate, instead of being a DemoPublican voter who sought truth from BOTH Parties and voted accordingly, i promise to be only a Democrate voter again. Are you Happy, am i forgiven and allowed back into the fold, am i once again a Sheeple?

YEP! I'm NOW a Ultra Conservative Independant Democrate Sheeple.
BUT WAIT! Thats what i was before when you would not listen to Warning SIGNS any Blind, Deaf person can see or hear in reguard to OUR Nations downfall under Obama, OUR Democrate President.
BAH, BAH, BAH, so where does this old black and white American Indian sign up for my Free money now that i'm back and gonna vote for the Right candidate like a GOOD little Sheeple should? Show me Da money.

I love it folks, you can't make this stuff up, it's reality gone wild with no sanity needed to participate, and one requirement needed which is ONLY VOTERS ALLOWED, THATS DEMOCRATIC VOTERS and you better hurry as we are running out of dat free money fast.

Denied full access to vote in Ohio? There seems to be some discussion in the national media that the troops overseas are going to have their votes, delayed/denied.

“”Current Ohio law – being challenged in the lawsuit brought by Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party against Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted and the state’s Attorney General Mike DeWine – includes a special provision to allow military voters to cast their ballots during the last three days (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) immediately prior to Election Day.

SPW please don't loose that # it's the only 1 u need

Once again isn't it funny how you SPW can spout anything you want being a DEMOCRATIC VOTER, and i also a VOTER under DEMOCRACY can not express my opinions which differ from yours.
Now that looks like the Democracy being spread all over the world to certain nations, mostly Islamic ones, but only the ones that don't have OIL. The OIL Islamic Nations can have it their OWN Democratic way, which is to not allow Democracy or Freedoms afforded under Democracy.

SPW my advice is for you to use your OWN advice and call that #, and SPW don't loose that #, its' the only one you want, and you'll feel better if you don't.

Thats no way to treat a Fellow Democrate VOTER SPW, and just because i'm a Ultra Conservative Independant Democrate, instead of a Far Left Liberal Onesided Democrate like you is why your nastyness is directed at me and others like me.

Just one debate

It is just one debate! But it was also a very important debate dealing with domestic issues and the economy.
Many thought that Romney was going to get handed his hat in this one. Even many from his own political party and his camp were a bit worried about how he would fair.

The encouraging point to last night ... more people watched the debate than was projected. Maybe we are beginning to see what is at stake in this election cycle.

Same thing 4 YRS AGO, NO BALLOTS

Lets see now if your fighting overseas in an area over run with militants paid by the USA every where in the world to fight everyone, even OUR AMERICAN TROOPS, one can understand why Obama does not want them to vote.
America started paying Bin Laden wayyyyyyyyy back when Russia was in Afgan and has not stopped paying them since.
This very same thing happened because the GOVT did not want votes cast by AMERICAN TROOPS in Swing States allowed to vote and have said that it was a slip up as the Ballots could not be sent or recieved in time for the AMERICAN TROOPS TO VOTE.

SPW, Tell me please if you would are these AMERICAN TROOPS that are not gonna vote UNAMERICANS?
Allow me to answer if i might.
NO, THE TROOPS ARE NOT, BUT OBAMA AND EVERYONE OF THE GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES THAT HAVE PERPATRATED THIS ACT ARE NOT AMERICANS BUT WHAT IS CALLED DOMESTIC THREATS, ATTACKS AGAINST AMERICA AND OUR FREEDOMS.
not yelling here SWP, just expounding or highlighting my point of the plan to do every thing they can to control the people and steal the AMERICAN FREEDOM found in OUR Voting Power.
If i remember the very same thing happened 4 years ago as well, when the OBAMANATION OF DESOLATIONS supporters were paying smokes and wine and hamburgers to homeless people for votes, and Black Panthers were threating people in Philidelpia outside voting precents, OUR TROOPS DIDN'T GET TO VOTE THEN EITHER.
They will do every thing they can to steal votes for their CHOSEN ONE, and Obama was not the first that this was done for, or the only party either.
Just keep kidding your self that voting is a FAIR AND HONEST Act of Freedom.

The FAILURE to send troops ballots was just a simple slip up due to their not realizing that the elections were so close and when they realized the error it was to late to get the troops ballots and get them back in time to be counted. REALLY!!

THIS IS WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN SAYING AS TO WHY NO BALLOTS TO TROOPS AND ANYONE THAT WOULD WATCH REAL NEWS CHANNELS WOULD HEAR ABOUT THESE THINGS WHICH ARE NEVER HARDLY MENTIONED ON WANNABE NEWS AGENCIES.

Of the nearly 2 million military voters residing in the states covered by the report, only 89,887 or 4.6 percent cast an absentee ballot that counted in 2010.
